Philip Rosenau Co., Inc. celebrates 60th Anniversary


We have come a long way since my parents, Phil and Dorothy started Philip Rosenau Co., Inc. 60 years ago. My parents started this company with loans from each of their parents, some industry knowledge (my dad worked for another janitorial distributor for 7 years), and an incredible work ethic that I haven’t seen in this industry since! In the beginning, it was just my mom and dad. My dad not only covered the sales calls to customers, he would pick up the product from the suppliers and deliver directly to the customers. My mom wore many hats too: Customer Service, Controller, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable. They worked out of our home in Elkins Park. My father carried a roll of dimes to stay in touch with my mom. One of my earliest memories is the excitement of the ringing phone with new orders!

My parents were able to expand and open a warehouse in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. I started working full time in our warehouse in 1975. I had no idea what I was getting into! The warehouse didn’t have heat, a loading dock or a landlord willing to shovel the snow. I was happy to graduate to delivering supplies in a converted old bread truck. After 3 years my father decided I was ready to move into sales. As time went on I developed my own book of business and dad slowly started to turn some of his customers to me. I remember fondly how proud he was of my ability to troubleshoot some of the trickier flooring issues for our customers.

In early 1984 Dad started to not feel well. After seeing the best neurologists in the city, they all had the same opinion: Dad had ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Unfortunately his ALS started in his chest, not his extremities.  He passed away on August 24, 1984. Mom and I were back to work the day after the funeral, which is what he would have wanted. Locally, people in the industry said we wouldn’t make it. With my mother’s help, we were able to not only stay in business but expand it. We have been fortunate that as our company has grown we have kept the feeling of family throughout the organization. In fact, my son Ben is now working as a Sales Leader for us!

 Many people have asked what has made our company successful.  From the beginning, my parents emphasized honesty and integrity within our organization as well as our partnerships with our customers and suppliers. These relationships have contributed to our success but our most valuable asset has been the people in our organization. We have been blessed to have worked with some of the Jan-San Industry’s brightest, creative and dedicated people!  70% of our employees have been with our company for more than 5 years. 

The industry has experienced many changes over the past 60 years which we fully expect to continue.  A sign in my office reminds me ‘what got you here won’t get you there’.  This will remain our mantra as we continue to improve upon who we are, and how we service our valued customers in the future. One behalf of myself, my wife Barbara, my children Stephanie and Ben, my son-in-law Martyn, my daughter-in-law Lilli, my granddaughter Leah and, most importantly, my mother Dorothy, I would like to thank everyone who has made our company what it is today.
